Samson Young
Samson Young, a composer and multimedia artist using sound, video, and performance who was born and currently based in Hong Kong. In his film, Build Socialism With Chinese Characteristics, he has dressed himself and an actor in Teletubby costumes (as Lala, the yellow teletubby and Po - the red and supposedly Chinese teletubby) while touring Hong Kong as visitors from the UK. The sound track of the video features Deng Xiaoping's 1979 speech "Build Socialism With Chinese Characteristics" rendered with a text-to-speech engine, which becomes increasingly distorted as the video progresses. The subtitle in English sometimes is a straight translation, and other times it switches to commenting on teletubbies the TV program. With formal training in classical music and a keen eye for moving images and installation-art, Young combines his expertise to create unique concert experiences.
