Ming Guang 董明光
Dong Ming Guang’s work reflects a loss of innocence under the duress of society’s structure and cultural traditions. The 12 fiberglass statuettes in Harmony Great Society represent the belief that each person’s character is directly related to their birth year and zodiac. The 12 heads depict the 12 zodiac animals of the Chinese calendar. The legend tells of a race across the river held by the Gods that not only determined the order of the animals in the 12 year cycle but also the attributes related to each from the hardworking rat, the dependable ox, the daring tiger, to the loyal pig. The statuettes in Harmony Great Society show the diminishing effect in the long standing tradition of defining a society’s individuals from birth based on the zodiac.
